Modular the perfect answer to rural housing shortage

Regional communities across NSW are suffering from a double shortage blow. It’s a catch twenty-two between needing more workers across the board and needing more accommodation to house them. Whichever way you look at it, one problem cannot be fixed without solving the other, especially when housing in regional areas is becoming both unaffordable and unavailable to those on medium to low incomes. Modular housing is one of my big ticket items as NSW Nationals Leader, and it is one of the main solutions we need to look at to stem the regional housing shortage.     It provides a real opportunity […]

Labor leaves the bush high and dry with drought looming

The NSW Nationals are calling on the Labor Government to unveil its drought preparedness plan, after small pockets of the state were declared to be back in drought. Nationals Leader Dugald Saunders said parts of the Hunter Valley and areas around Grafton and Casino have been identified as being already impacted by the Department of Primary Industries’ Combined Drought Indicator. “After a dry winter and ahead of the warmer months, drought is now on every farmer’s mind. It is seemingly inevitable, it is coming, and we need to prepare for it”, Mr Saunders said. “The last drought was the worst

Saunders urges residents to sign petition after Labor abandons regional seniors

Member for the Dubbo electorate Dugald Saunders has urged residents to sign a petition designed to pressure the Labor government into keeping a hugely successful cost-of-living measure aimed towards regional seniors. The Coalition rolled out the $250 Regional Seniors Travel Card in 2019, and more than a million cards have been distributed since. But after cutting off applications for the card in July, Labor on Saturday announced a 4c per litre reduction in fuel for seniors at United service stations. “Labor’s announcement on Saturday is a weak attempt to compensate eligible seniors, and the most genuine sign so far that

Saunders urges Labor to support our regional communities with vital funding

Vital community projects in every local government area across regional NSW are under threat, with the Labor government refusing to rule out scrapping the hugely successful Stronger Country Communities Fund (SCCF). Member for the Dubbo electorate Dugald Saunders has urged the Minister for Regional NSW Tara Moriarty to stand up for communities in the bush and roll out the $90 million in funding that had been set aside by the previous government for the next round of the program. “Every day we’re reminded of the success of this program, and how it has made a really meaningful difference to the

Community groups invited to apply for infrastructure grants

Organisations across the region can now apply for funding to support local community projects under the NSW Government’s Infrastructure Grants program. Member for the Dubbo electorate Dugald Saunders said the program provides organisations the opportunity to apply for funding of between $50,000 and $250,000 to cover the cost of construction, alteration, renovation, completion, and fit-out of buildings and community infrastructure that benefits regional communities. “This is a great chance for local organisations to seek funding for a project to provide long-term tangible benefits to the community,” Mr Saunders said. “In previous rounds we’ve funded renovations to the Gulgong RSL to

Dubbo Youth Koori Court

Today marked the ceremonial opening of the Dubbo Youth Koori Court, which began its operations in March 2023. This significant milestone marks the culmination of efforts made possible by the funding provided by the previous NSW Liberal and Nationals Government. Dubbo is the first regional location for the Youth Koori Court, following its successful operation in Sydney and Paramatta since 2015. Since its inception, the Dubbo Youth Koori Court has already proven to be an essential pillar of our justice system, offering culturally sensitive and tailored approaches to address the unique needs and challenges faced by Indigenous youth in the

Entries now open for NSW Parliament short film competition

Secondary school students across NSW can show off their creative talents in the Parliament of NSW’s short film competition Parli-Flicks. Member for the Dubbo electorate Dugald Saunders said entries are now open for the competition. “Students are asked to submit a one-minute short film addressing this year’s theme ‘Should the voting age be lowered?’, which is an interesting topic to explore,” Mr Saunders said. “This is the third year Parli-Flicks has been held, and it’s a creative way for students to get involved in learning about and expressing their understanding of our democratic system. “I encourage all students to be

Nationals leader calls out Labor’s lack of long-term vision

NSW Nationals Leader Dugald Saunders has pushed Labor for continued investment in Agriculture and training for the regions, during an address at the NSW Farmers Conference. Mr Saunders welcomed the Government’s announcement of support for the varroa mite response and for funding the next tranche of the transition to electronic identification (eID) for sheep and managed goats. Labor unveiled a $28m package for saleyards and processors to invest in new infrastructure, a year after Mr Saunders secured agreement from all states for the implementation of a national mandatory eID program. “12 months ago, we recognised there was a weakness in

Urgent action needed to clear flood waste from cane fields

The NSW Opposition is calling on the Government to provide financial assistance to clear dangerous debris from cane fields across the Northern Rivers, after last year’s catastrophic floods. Leader of the NSW Nationals Dugald Saunders said cane growers are still finding unsafe waste in their paddocks. “One of the lingering issues for farmers following the 2022 floods is the hazardous materials that are left behind once the water subsides,” Mr Saunders said. “Cane crops in northern NSW can take two years to mature and with the first major harvest underway since the deluge, farmers are now facing dangerous conditions. “We

Muddy path ahead for Labor’s feral pig control plan

NSW Nationals Leader and Shadow Agriculture Minister Dugald Saunders has criticised the Labor government for lacking a long-term vision to tackle the growing feral pig problem across regional NSW. Premier Chris Minns and Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty have today outlined plans for an additional $8 million to fund a coordinated control program, adding to the $5 million that had already been committed by the former Coalition government. Mr Saunders said Labor needs to look beyond the next 12 months when it comes to addressing the issue. “I welcome any investment into regional NSW, particularly for pest animal eradication and biosecurity,
