Empowering communities to respond to trauma

Communities across Western NSW are set to benefit from a range of trauma care workshops thanks to a grant from the NSW Government’s COVID-19 Community Connection and Wellbeing Program.

Member for the Dubbo electorate Dugald Saunders said CareFlight has received $95,411 to deliver its Community Trauma Care Training for COVID-19 Recovery workshops in 11 towns, including Dubbo, Narromine, Gilgandra and Wilcannia.

“Whether you’re an emergency service volunteer, or just a motorist who comes across a car accident, any one of us could be called upon to provide urgent life-saving care during our lifetime,” Mr Saunders said.

“Unfortunately, events like floods, fires and accidents are far too common, so it’s crucial people know how to respond.

“These workshops will empower our communities and make them eve more resilient!”

CareFlight Head of Education and Training Colin Brown said the organisation brings free training into the heart of communities to ensure cost isn’t a barrier to accessing lifesaving skills.

“There can be a huge burden placed on regional communities when volunteer first responders have to take time off work, and cover the costs of transportation and accommodation to access training in major cities,” Mr Brown said.

“These workshops give first responders and community members a unique opportunity to train together and strengthen their communication and collaboration, which helps to support service cohesion and fortify their emergency response efforts in the field.

“The Workshop provides training across cognitive and social skills such as teamwork, decision-making, situational awareness, leadership, fatigue and stress management, as well as technical skills like how to secure an airway, stem a haemorrhage, conduct a full assessment of injuries, and conduct a handover of a patient to professional medical services.”
