Dubbo Golf Club will once again be on show to some of the best golfers in NSW, as it hosts the final tournament of the NSW Regional Open Series in January 2023.
Member for the Dubbo Electorate Dugald Saunders said the Western Open has proven very popular with the visiting golfers, along with locals, and has complemented the success of the 2020 NSW Women’s Open, which was also hosted in Dubbo.
“The last couple of years have been amazing, both in regards to the golfing talent we’ve seen on the Dubbo fairways and greens, but also in the amount of interest that’s been generated in the community,” Mr Saunders said.
“Last November we saw an amazing finish as Daniel Gale fended off a number of challengers to win by a stroke from the extremely talented Grace Kim, and hopefully we’ll have another excellent tournament in January.
“The Western Open in Dubbo runs from January 8-10, closing out the $300,000 six tournament series across the state, and I know it will once again bring plenty of economic benefit to the club, the city, and the rest of the region.”
With a $50,000 purse on offer (professionals only), the top three placegetters (professional or amateur not otherwise already qualified) will also secure a start in the 2023 NSW Open.
Dubbo Golf Club President Niall McNicol said the benefits from hosting this type of event are incredible.
“What we see at the club is the recognition of how good the Dubbo course actually is, and that word spreads among golfers,” he said.
“Thanks to the funding we received from the NSW government we’ve worked really hard over the past few years on upgrades including irrigation, and the quality of our offering will hopefully help us attract major events like this in the future.”
