Dubbo locals and visitors to the region will get to experience a full sporting weekend when the thoroughbred, greyhound and rugby league industries combine in the city next month
With support from Racing NSW, Dubbo Turf Club will host a TAB meeting on Saturday, May 22 to complement the NRL fixture between South Sydney and Penrith on Sunday, May 23, and a greyhound meeting that will be held at Dawson Park on the Saturday evening.
The NSW Government has combined with Dubbo Regional Council to bring the NRL to the city for the first time, and Member for the Dubbo electorate Dugald Saunders said the inclusion of other events ensures a bumper weekend.
“Earlier this week we outlined how the Brother Fox heats will be held at Dawson Park on the Saturday night and it’s great that Dubbo Turf Club has been able to secure a race meeting for the Saturday afternoon,” Mr Saunders said.
“These events value-add to the NRL, and combined with wonderful tourist offerings we already have, like Taronga Western Plains Zoo, Old Dubbo Gaol, the RFDS Visitor Centre and Wellington Caves, it means there is plenty for people to do.”
Dubbo Turf Club acting general manager Gavin Barlow said the organisation was keen to be involved once it was announced the South Sydney Rabbitohs were bringing their home game against Penrith to the city.
“We’ve seen in places like Mudgee that having the races along with the footy works well, and it also gives us a chance to showcase our track and our product to people who are coming to Dubbo for the NRL,” Mr Barlow said.
“We’re working with South Sydney and will have a corporate marquee with some former legends in attendance at the race meeting.
“Souths has been great and we hope this can be the start of a long-term relationship between the city, the turf club and the Rabbitohs.”
