Mudgee scores 2023 NRL Premiership

The Mudgee economy will receive a significant boost with an influx of visitors set to spend up in local shops, cafes and businesses, thanks to the NSW Government’s Regional Events Acceleration Fund.

Member for the Dubbo electorate Dugald Saunders said a $150,000 grant will help the Mid-Western Regional Council host the NRL premiership game between Manly and Newcastle at Glen Willow Stadium in 2023.

“The Sea Eagles love coming to Mudgee, and I’m sure thousands of fans will be here on April 1 for a grudge match which dates back to the 1997 Grand Final,” Mr Saunders said.

“From the annual pre-season Charity Shield between the South Sydney Rabbitohs and St George Illawarra, to the great partnership with Manly, we know Mudgee crowds get behind the NRL – and the NRL loves Mudgee.

“Events like an NRL game bring loads of visitors to town, providing a massive economic boost, and creating a great buzz for locals as well.

“As Chair of the NRL Regional Taskforce, I’m committed to helping elite clubs give back to the grassroots and inspire the next generation of sporting stars.”

Mid-Western Regional Council Mayor Des Kennedy said the funding will provide a unique experience for Mudgee, and Council is delighted at the prospect of uniting local families and eager fans with their sporting heroes.

“This funding will be used to support temporary infrastructure including open-air grandstand seating and a corporate marquee at Glen Willow Stadium, offering more options for families and fans attending the event,” Mr Kennedy said.

“This is a great opportunity for Mudgee to put on an iconic event for locals and visitors, and it’s all thanks to the NSW Government’s Regional Events Acceleration Fund.”

The $40 million Regional Events Acceleration Fund is part of the $3.3 billion Regional Growth Fund, designed to support growing regional centres, activate local economies and improve services and community infrastructure for regional communities.
