The epic rise of women’s sport will include Gulgong after Member for the Dubbo electorate Dugald Saunders announced funding for amenities at Billy Dunn Oval.
Mr Saunders said Mid-Western Regional Council had been successful with an application for $122,052 to complete the construction of an amenities building at the oval, which will include male and female change rooms.
Currently there are no female change facilities at the complex, and Mr Saunders said it is time to recognise the importance of women’s sport.
“We’ve seen in recent times that a number of codes have included womens competitions and it has added a new dimension to sport in our regional towns and cities,” Mr Saunders said.
“In Australia we have the best womens cricket side, the best womens rugby league side, the best womens Rugby Sevens side, and our national womens soccer side is also among the best in the world.
“Having these facilities available will enable young girls and women to get involved in sport, and they can aspire to reach the heights of their idols.”
Mid-Western Regional Council mayor Cr Des Kennedy said the project, which will cost a total of $260,000, will be a game changer for sport in the town.
“It’s fantastic to get funding and council will be tipping in the remainder of the funds to make it a reality,” he said. “This will be a great facility for the girls, and as we know girls are playing more and more outdoor activity sports. They really need to be treated as they should be with upgraded facilities.”
