A new water treatment plant is now operating in Narromine thanks to $2 million in funding from the NSW Government.
Under its Safe and Secure program, the government provided Narromine Shire Council with the funding to secure the supply of treated water for the town.
Member for the Dubbo Electorate Dugald Saunders said the water treatment plant has significantly improved the quality of the town’s water supply while also protecting it against future drought events.
“During the recent drought Narromine was forced into severe water restrictions as existing town bores were drawn down, and water in the deeper bores was not suitable for drinking without treatment,” Mr Saunders said.
“The NSW Government has worked closely with Council to deliver this innovative new water treatment plant system which uses ozone instead of chlorine to treat the deep bore water, making it cleaner and greener.
“It also uses a filter press for the wastewater which replaces the need for large on-site lagoons to hold and dry the impurities removed from the water. This has significantly reduced the plant’s footprint. For the first time since 2018 water restrictions have been lifted in the town.”
Minister for Water Melinda Paveysaid the new treatment plant will give the local community added confidence to deal with future droughts.
“This project is a great example of how we are all working together to build a safer and stronger regional NSW,” Mrs Pavey said.
“While the recent rains have boosted local water supply across regional NSW, now is not the time to be complacent. We need to use the precious gift of time these rain events have given us to prepare and plan for the future, building the infrastructure and systems required to future-proof regional communities against drought.” The new treatment plant can filter up to 2.5 megalitres per day of untreated water from deep bore wells to a standard suitable for the town’s water supply.
