A community-driven initiative to install life-saving equipment around Gulgong has received a welcome boost from the NSW Government.
Member for the Dubbo electorate Dugald Saunders has today announced $6000 for the group Heart of Gulgong to purchase two portable automatic external defibrillators to add to the dozen already installed around the town.
“Statistics show use of an AED in the first three minutes of a cardiac arrest increases your chance of survival by up to 70% – but that drops for every additional minute you have to wait for assistance,” Mr Saunders said.
“There are already 11 AEDs available around Gulgong during business hours, but I’m proud these two will be accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“The Heart of Gulgong group is an absolute credit to the Gulgong community and I’m proud the NSW Government has been able to support the program in this small, yet life-changing way.”
Heart of Gulgong works with local businesses and community organisations to fund and locate AEDs strategically around the town, to ensure the vital equipment is within easy reach.
There are also a number of portable machines available for hire by community groups, should they require them for an event.
Heart of Gulgong Chair Rob Barton said the group is extremely grateful for the support of the NSW Government.
“If it saves one life then the whole project has been worthwhile,” Mr Barton said.
“Thank you to Dugald and thank you to the state government for the support of our program, it’s very much appreciated by our community.”
