Member for the Dubbo Electorate Dugald Saunders has welcomed the official opening of the new Dubbo Cycle Club facility, saying it is a game changer for a club that has a strong tradition of producing champion riders.
An official ceremony is being held at the River Street facility on Tuesday evening, just weeks after the club officially moved its racing schedule from its former home at No.1 Oval.
The new facility consists of a 400-metre track designed similarly to the much-loved No.1 Oval circuit, which also features a dedicated warm-up/cool-down section.
A 1km criterium circuit and a clubhouse are also included at the complex, which was made possible thanks to almost $4.3 million in funding from the NSW Government and additional contributions from Dubbo Regional Council.
Mr Saunders recently spoke about the success of Dubbo Cycle Club in a Private Members Statement at NSW Parliament, and he said it is fitting that the organisation now has a modern facility to match its reputation as the best club in Australia.
“The likes of Bob Spears, Darrell Wheeler, Andrew Taylor, Megan Dunn and many more have gone from humble beginnings in Dubbo to the upper echelon of the sport, and that tradition continues today,” Mr Saunders said.
“With good reason, riders who wear the green and red lycra are respected across the world, so it makes sense for the club to have a dedicated facility that gives their track and road riders the best possible opportunities.
“I’m proud that the NSW Government has invested almost $4.3 million into this project, which gives Dubbo Cycle Club a facility befitting its standing within the cycling community. “This complex will work in well with the planned sports hub, to be located on land at Charles Sturt University, which the NSW Government has funded through $23.3 million of direct and indirect grants.”
