Community radio station DCFM 88.9 will be able to increase the amount of presenters it trains thanks to funding secured by Member for the Dubbo electorate Dugald Saunders.
Mr Saunders announced on Friday that $10,000 had been given to the organisation to purchase computers, headphones, audio editing equipment and a wireless microphone system.
“Unfortunately in recent times there has been a real thinning out of regional media, across all mediums, but this is a way that Dubbo’s community radio station can help train people who want to get involved in the industry,” Mr Saunders said.
“In a lot of cases these are business decisions made by major companies, and nothing can be done about that, but this funding will allow a community radio station to provide a pathway for locals.
“Staff at DCFM have already trained four young people to become radio presenters, and two have moved on to study journalism, with a third to leave in 2021.
“As someone who spent over a decade in broadcasting in the central west, I know the role media outlets play in regional areas, and I look forward to there being an avenue for local people interested in joining the profession to get their start.”
