$45,000 boost for Dubbo Dementia Choir

An initiative that’s already making a huge difference for people with dementia has received another boost thanks to the NSW Government’s COVID-19 Community Connection and Wellbeing Program.

Member for the Dubbo electorate Dugald Saunders said Lourdes Hospital and Community Nursing has received $45,000 to operate the Dubbo Dementia ‘Sing Out’ Choir.

This builds on the funding Mr Saunders secured earlier in the year to establish the choir – the first of its kind in regional NSW.

“Social interaction is vital for everyone as we age – but especially for those with dementia,” Mr Saunders said.

“Unfortunately, our elderly were also some of the most vulnerable to the threat of COVID, and have borne the brunt of the isolation we’ve all endured in recent years.

“I’m incredibly proud we’re able to support this initiative, which is all about bringing people together again. Music therapy is like medicine for the dementia-affected brain, and I’ve witnessed first-hand the joy it brings, and I’ve heard from countless carers and family members who say that, for those couple of hours, they get their loved ones back.”

For many patients who displayed aggressive or antisocial behaviour in the initial weeks of the choir, regular attendance has seen those behaviours drastically decrease and even cease.

Dementia counsellor Anne Gemmell said the choir attracts 65 to 70 people each week, and she expects that number to grow with the support of ongoing funding.

“Without this kind of funding, the choir wouldn’t be possible,” Ms Gemmell said.

“It hasn’t just allowed us to establish an all-inclusive choir for those living with dementia, their careers, family members, friends, volunteer singers and musicians, but also to recruit professionals to nurture our clients through sessions, and to host an end-of-year concert.

“We have clients who recognise songs each week now, and remember that’s their time to come to the front and dance, often without their walkers which is amazing!”
